Description
"Small but Mighty is an illustrated early nonfiction book about some of the smallest yet mightiest and most fascinating creatures on Earth, along with their impact on the planet. Experts now agree that saving the smallest animals on Earth is just as urgent as saving the big ones because many of these teeny-tiny beings are keystone species-creatures critical to the survival of other species in the surrounding ecosystem. The book also includes small-but-mighty species that are not keystone creatures but nevertheless important. Animals featured include krill, leafcutter ants, least weasels, and honeybees. Small but Mighty features one animal per spread and includes fascinating facts as well as a discussion of why each creature matters. For example, readers learn that enormous swarms of krill can be seen from space. But krill are important because most ocean life feeds on and depends on them for the nutrients the tiny creatures get from eating microscopic plants called phytoplankton. The book ends by drawing the parallel that kids may be small but they are mighty too-and can also have an impact on the planet. The text is complemented by Catarina Oliveira's vibrant digital art, which includes both a humorous and a more realistic illustration of each animal in its natural habitat. Other recurring spread elements-an illustrated size comparison and a fun fact-offer multiple entry points to help draw in reluctant readers. The book will also include a glossary"--
